As a senior video producer on the GC video team I created advocacy and news videos created for social media, editorial, events and brand partnerships.
Leyla's video interview is just one piece in a multimedia long-form investigative story titled "FGM Among US". My role was producing and editing the FGM Survivor's video interview. The project itself was hosted on the Global Citizen site and incorporated illustration, video, photographs, and written reporting about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
The most challenging aspect of the project was finding a way to educate our millennial viewers on what FGM is in a sensitive, non-graphic, and relatable way. The video itself was filmed in London, which meant I had to fully produce the shoot remotely – including sourcing the studio, hiring a video producer freelancer, completing the video brief, reviewing the interview questions with the UK team, and coordinating the footage handoff to the NYC office. We also had very limited budget for the video components so I had to find a freelancer and a studio that fit within the parameters.
I thoroughly briefed my freelance network and found a talented and affordable freelancer who was available during our timeline. Through him I was able to find a studio that had the amount of black backdrop necessary for the interview style I had in mind. Through much communication and early morning whats-app phone calls, I was confident that the shoot went smoothly and was completed well within budget. In terms of the sensitivity issues, the content & video teams and I worked closely with our policy team to insure that we were communicating FGM in the most transparent way while keeping the integrity in mind of the people personally impacted.
The video and the project as a whole was our most successful multimedia investigative project in terms of KPI's and actions taken. The video was posted on the Global Citizen Facebook page multiple times and got over a million views. The video is a powerful personal account and we've used the interview video format (text treatment + interview set up) as a guide for multiple videos since.
This video was created in response to the Rohingya refugee crisis early in 2018. I collaborated with a writer on staff and worked closely with the community arts non-profit Artolution for the storytelling. My role was producing and editing the video for the Global Citizen website and for social channels.
The biggest challenge here wasn't actually the logistics of it being an international project. The biggest challenge was securing permission to film the children within the camps. The pre-production was the most time intensive because we were working with multiple organizations on the ground to secure permissions for filming. It was also a challenge getting the English translations. Additionally we didn't have any Global Citizen footage to illustrate the Rohingya crisis as the Rohingya were fleeing.
Similar to the FGM piece, I worked closely with my local connections. To many relief organizations partnering with Artolution, I expressed the reasons why we were telling this story and why it was important to highlight the light the community arts was bringing to these children. After many discussions we were able to get the permissions needed. Through the freelance video producer we were able to secure a highly skilled translator who was sensitive to the issues these children were facing day to day. I tapped into our subscription services to find the footage needed to illustrate the crisis at hand.
The video was widely received across our GC channels. Demi Lovato - a champion for mental health - actually shared the video on her own channel which brought the story to an even wider audience!
When Global Citizen ran a campaign to reform cash bail in the U.S. we realized that much of our audience didn’t know how the cash bail system works. To solve for this, we asked Insha Rahman of Vera Institute to break it down for us in an engaging way. Knowing that the content would be statistic heavy, I worked with a motion graphics designer to storyboard and create animations that would help break down the complex topic.
The day ofter President Trump’s inauguration, the content and social teams joined the hundreds of thousands at the inaugural Women’s March in Washington. It was my first 2 weeks at Global Citizen and I wrote the brief, drafted interview questions, filmed b-roll, and edited the video for the Global Citizen social channels in time for it to be published Monday morning within the news cycle.
